Did you know? Just like humans, dogs can also suffer from bad breath.
The medical term for bad breath in dogs (and humans) is halitosis, and it can be caused by a variety of factors, including poor dental hygiene, diet, and health issues. If you’re finding that your dog’s breath isn’t smelling as good as it used to, there are a few things you can do to help improve it.
- Brush your dog’s teeth: Just like humans, dogs need regular dental care to maintain good oral hygiene. Unfortunately, they can’t brush their own teeth, so it’s up to us to do it for them. Brushing your dog’s teeth with a toothbrush and toothpaste designed for dogs can help remove plaque and tartar build-up, which can cause bad breath. It’s best to brush your dog’s teeth daily, but even weekly will help to keep their breath smelling good.
- Provide chew toys: Chewing on toys can help remove plaque and tartar build-up in your dog’s mouth. Choose toys that are specifically designed to clean teeth and promote dental health. Your local pet shop will have a good selection of toys for this purpose.
- Provide dental treats: Dental treats can also help reduce bad breath in dogs. Look for treats that are specifically designed to freshen breath and promote dental health. You can chat to your vet for their recommendation, or find a range in your local pet store.
- Change your dog’s diet: Your dog’s diet can play a significant role in their breath odour. If your dog’s breath is particularly stinky, consider switching to a high-quality dog food. Raw, meaty bones can also be useful in helping keep your dog’s teeth clean and healthy, in conjunction with a high-quality diet.
- Visit the vet: If your dog’s bad breath persists even after trying the above remedies, it may be a sign of an underlying health issue. Take your dog to the vet for a check-up to rule out any potential health problems.
